Leesylvania State Park
Over 500 acres of camping, fishing, boating, and historical attractions are available in Leeslyvania State Park. Henry Lee II, the grandfather of General Robert E. Lee, settled in what is said to have originally been an Algonquian settlement in 1747. Henry Fairfax and his son John Fairfax later made it their home there. On September 25, 1861, the Freestone Point Confederate Battery, which was stationed there during the Civil War, engaged in a minor engagement with a number of U.S. Navy ships. There were no casualties on either side. Only the chimney and a cornerstone remain from the Lee home today. The tombs of Henry Fairfax and Henry Lee II are also on the site. Numerous hiking routes, group campsites, boating and fishing spots, covered picnic places, and a visitor center are available to park visitors.
Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge
Over 600 acres of natural grasslands, marshes, and woodlands make up the Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge. It is situated near the confluence of the Potomac and Occoquan rivers. It was once used by the US Army for testing before being taken over by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Wetlands cover more than half of the refuge’s surface. The remaining land is made up of marshes and meadows that are all crammed into a limited space. For hundreds of species of fish, birds, and insects, this distinctive terrain provides an excellent environment. There are various paths across the refuge that are intended for bicycles, automobiles, and hiking.
PWC Stadium Complex
The Potomac Nationals’ home field is Northwest Federal Field at Pfitzner Stadium, which was constructed in 1984. When the field was refurbished to meet Major League Baseball requirements in 2011, the Northwest Federal moniker was added to the G. Richard Pfitzner Stadium name. A video and image-capable electronic scoreboard is available at Pfitzner Stadium. The dugouts are situated at field level, unlike other fields, and are only separated from the players by netting. There would be a new stadium for the Potomac Nationals, according to rumors in 2016. When the Potomac Nationals leave the stadium, some plans call for its demolition, while others want to maintain it as a sports-themed complex including BMX bike tracks and softball fields.
Rippon Lodge Historic Site
Rippon Lodge, Richard Blackburn’s 1747 construction above the Potomac River, is the oldest still-standing home in Prince William County, Virginia. It was formerly a tobacco plantation and lived on by the Atkinson family for a century until being purchased and refurbished by Judge Wade H. Ellis, a relative of the original builder Richard Blackburn. After passing through the hands of explorer Admiral Richard Blackburn Black and his daughter, the house was eventually sold to Prince William County in 2000. The 40 acres of gardens and the house were restored by Prince William County, and interpretative walking pathways were added. There are other cemeteries there named Blackburn and Atkinson.
